#587: Can One who is a Poor Reader of the Qurʿān read an English Translation Instead?
QUESTION
” Assalam aleikum.. Someone who is a poor reader of the Arabic text of the Holy Quran.. Can reading the transliteration or English text be a substitute?”
ANSWER
Wa alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
This is not permissible in the least. Know that the Ulamā have considered it impermissible to write the Qur’ān with alphabets other than Arabic, other than the Alphabets with which the Companions compiled it in the Rasm ‘Uthmānī (Script of Uthmān) which is the final scripts agreed upon by the Sahābah in the reign of ‘Uthmān Ibn ‘Affān, the Fourth Caliph.
This position we have mentioned is agreed upon among the ‘Ulamā past and present without argument.
Rather what is obligatory upon this person is to pay attention to learning the Qur’ān the way it was sent down to the Prophet – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – and in the Arabic fonts. And the exertion of efforts in its learning and perfection here is more important than worrying over inability to recite it the way its supposed by virtue of his weakness in Arabic reading.
Do not resort to transliterated texts, go and learn the Arabic as it was sent down to the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam .
