#592: Is it Sunnah to Prolong the Last Sujūd in Salāt
QUESTION
” Salaam, pls is it sunnah to prolong the last sujud of every prayer (compulsory or obligatory)”
ANSWER
Wa alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh.
It is not part of the Sunnah to prolong the last Sujūd for the purpose of Du’ā or for any other purpose. This is because there is nothing authentically reported that the Rasūl – salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam – took the last Sujūd special or made it different from the other Sujūd.
Rather, what is known is that the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – balanced all the positions of his Salāt and they were about the same period of time.
Imām Al-Bukhārī and Imām Muslim both recorded a Hadīth from Barā’ Ibn ‘Ādāb – radiyallāhu ‘anhu – that he said:
“Indeed the Salāt of the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – was such that his Ruku’u, whenever he raises his head from the ruki’u, his Sujūd and what is between the two Sujūd are approximately the same in period.”
Likewise, if it is a Congregational Salāt, the Imām is expected to observe the Salāt with a consideration of the people he is leading.
Imām An-Nawawī – rahimahullāh – said:
“The command to the Imām is to lighten the Salāt in such a way that it does not affect any of the Sunan or its goals. And that if he were to be praying alone, he can prolong it for as long as he likes of the positions that can take prolonging.”
And Allāh knows best.
