QUESTION
” Asallam Alaikum Warahmotullahi Wabarakatuh, can this boy of 21years of age fast because he is sickle cell patient ie SS, very serious bc he always have crisis every month and doctor advised him to always take 5litres of water everyday please what does Shari’a say about him please admin very urgent”
ANSWER
Wa alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh!
If his condition is as you have said, and under the advise of the Medical Doctor that you trust, it has been mentioned that fasting would tell negatively on his health, then it is permissible for him to postpone his fast till after Ramadān and when he is able to make the fast.
However, if it is said that this illness and condition is not one which he can be cured of, then he falls under the category of those for whom feeding is permissible unrestrictedly without fasting.
That said, know, may Allāh’s mercy be upon us all, that this is not resorted to unless of a certainty it is confirmed that fasting will be detrimental to his health or cause him intense difficulty. Taking five litres of water a day is something that can be achieved within the night period in the time span between maghrib and Subh. But if it is proven that fasting would be very difficult or be detrimental to his health as we have explained, then he may not observe the fast. And Allāh knows best.
We ask Allāh to grant him sound health and to make his illness a Kaffārah for him and his entire family, āmīn
