#635: Advice to Muslim Brother on Marriage Propasal
QUESTION
CAN I GO AHEAD TO PROPOSE MARRIAGE TO A SISTER I ALWAYS MAKE TASLIM TO WHENEVER WE MEET IN SCHOOL?
“There is a sister I know in my school whom we are not really close, but whenever we see ourselves we do give ourselves the teslim….This sister is actually a sister whom I can later propose to for marriage(In Sha Allah)…As I always think, before even proposing there should be some kind of close intimacy,,,The problem is can I propose to her now that we are not really close,or there must be intimacy before proposing”
ANSWER
Alhamdulillāh
We advise you to return to the Legal processes of seeking a wife rather than thinking of proposing marriage to a sister you make Taslim to on the streets.
You are required by the Sharī’ah, after arriving at a well thought out decision to marry a particular sister, to contact any of her Awliyā on your intentions, and then to present same to them. You may then be granted access to communicate with her by them if it is necessary. Your communication with her Awliyā, and later her, should strictly be on the subject matter. There is no legality, in Islām for any prolonged waiting and discussions as this lead to the cultivation of Shaytān and the temptations of the base desires. There is no room for intimacy .
This is what we advise you to do.
May Allāh guide you toward this great and important ‘Ibādah, and purify our hearts, and yours from the blemishes of Fitnah, amīn
