Q&A (Fatwa)

#652: The Meaning of the Name “Maryam”

QUESTION:

“Pls sir wot is d meaning of my name MARYAM”

ANSWER

Alhamdulillāh.

The name Maryam was originally of Hebrew origin and means Servant of the Lord and would translate into Arabic as ‘Ābidah

It has been mentioned that Maryam the mother of ‘Īsah was the first that was named as that by her mother the wife of ‘Imrān.

And this was because she had committed her to the service and worship of Allāh right from when she was pregnant of her as is shown in the Qur’ān in Sūrah Āl-‘Imrān.

The name Maryam was mentioned 34 times in the Qur’ān, and is the only woman whose name was mentioned in the Qur’ān.

The Latin rendering of the name is Māriya and Māriyān in other Languages.

And Allāh knows best.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
