#657: Ruling on Working in a Bank due to tough Economic Situation
QUESTION:
“Assalamu alaikum warahmatullah wabarakaatuhu. Can one work in banks or any other place unfit for a Muslim to work and consider it dhorurah, because there are no jobs, and the economy is hard?”
ANSWER:
Wa ‘Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh.
After knowing that anything based on Usury is Harām and that the Rasūl – salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam – has cursed those who participate in it, records it and witnesses to it.
As it has been recorded by Imām Muslim from Jābir bn ‘Abdillah – radiyallāhu ‘anhumā – that he – radiyallāhu ‘anhu – said:
لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ آكِلَ الرِّبَا، وَمُؤْكِلَهُ، وَكَاتِبَهُ ، وَشَاهِدَيْهِ
“Indeed the Messenger of Allāh – salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam – cursed the eater/beneficiary of Ribā (Usury/Interest), the one who gives it, the one who records it, and the one who witnesses to it.”
He said:
هُمْ سَوَاءٌ
“They are the same”
After this has been known and established, what then is working in a bank other than this?!
There is no excuse for such a person. And the economic condition to which some people refer does not apply here and will not be a reason for any Muslim who believes in Allāh and the Last Day and fears the Standing on the Day of Resurrection to enrol as an employee in such banks.
And Allāh knows best.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
