Q&A (Fatwa)

#66. CLASSIFICATIONS ON THE ITHMID

Assalaamu alaykum warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh

Beloved brothers, after the answers that we posted on the platform on the Kohl and the Hadith that the best of it is the “Ithmid”, some brothers have asked on what the ithmid is.

The *Ithmid*, and Allah knows best, is the natural mineral stone known as *Antimony* that is found in places in the Middle East whose powder, colour ranging between red, black and brown, is used as Kohl for sharpening the eyes and cleaning it.

Murtada Az-Zubaydi – rahimahullaah – said in ‘Taaju Al-Arus’:

“The Ithmid is a stone of the Kohl that ranges in colour between black and red. Its mine is found in Isbahaan which is the best of it, and in the Maghrib which is the strongest.”
*Taaju Al-Arus* (4/468)

In modern times, it is used in Lead Batteries and Metal Detectors.

It should be noted that the Health specialists that speak against the use of Antimony express those concerns over those that are mixed with Lead.
