#667: Ruling on attending Christian Weddings Holding in the Churches
QUESTION:
“Pls it is permissible for Muslim sister or brother to attend the wedding of Christians in the church”
ANSWER:
Alhamdulillāh the ‘Ulamā have differed on the permissibility of a Muslim entering the Christian Church or the Jewish Monastery at any point in time.
The Hanafis held that it was Harām as was mentioned by Ibn Najīm in Al-Bahru Ar-Rā’iq
The Mālikis opined that it was Makrūh all the way. This position is also shared by some Hanbalis as was strengthened by Ibn Taymiyyah – rahimahullāh – in Al-Fatāwah.
The Shāfi’ī School holds the official position that it was Harām if there were in it statues. This is mentioned in Nihāyatu Al-Muhtāj
The official position of the Hanbalī School is that it were Permissible – Halal – all the way as long as there are no Munkar (wrong deeds against the Injunctions of Allāh) taking place there. This was mentioned by Ibn Al-Muflih in Al-Ādāb and Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisī – in Al-Mughnī rahimahumallāh.
The Dhāhiri School as confirmed by Ibn Hazm in Al-Muhallā also share the Hanbalī position.
What seems strongest, and Allāh knows best, is the permissibility of that provided it is free of Munkar as the Hanbalis hold. But you will agree with me that this is highly impossible in modern times where Christianity has become a congregation of Transgressors and Sinners against the Injunctions of Allāh. The Muslim must therefore avoid their gathering places as much as he can.
