#685: Ruling on performing Janāzah on the One who kills himself
QUESTION:
“Assalaamu alaikum! Please what is the Islamic ruling on one who kills oneself? Can we perform Janaza for him or make Dua for him. Jazaakumullahu khairan”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh.
It is important that we emphasize firstly that to kill the self is a great sin that guarantees a Servant the wrath of Allāh and Nār in the after life, wa ‘Iyādhu billāh
But while we note that, we must also note that it is not among the crimes that cannot be forgiven by Allāh.
Because it is not Kufr and not shirk.
Allāh said:
إن الله لا يغفر أن يشرك به ويغفر ما دون ذلك لمن يشاء
“Indeed Allāh does not forgive that Partners be associated with Him but He forgives other than that to whomsoever He pleases.”
And it has been recorded by Imām Muslim from Jābir bn ‘Abdillah – radiyallāhu ‘anhumā – the following Hadīth:
“When the Rasūl – salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam – migrated to Madīnah, Tufayl bn ‘Amr migrated with him and so did a man from his People. So they reached Madīnah (as Muhājirīn). Then he became severely sick and he lost hope (in recovery) and used a Very sharp arrow of his to cut his knuckles off, his hands began to flow blood until he died.
Tufayl bn ‘Amr saw him in a dream thereafter and saw him in a beautiful dress concealing his hands and asked him: what has your Lord done with you? He said: *’He forgave me by virtue of my Hijrah to His Prophet – salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam’* he said: ‘Why do I see you concealing your hands?’ He said: ‘It was said to me: we will not make good for you that which you had ruined’.
Then Tufayl narrated this to the Rasūl – salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam – then the Rasūl – salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam – said: *”O Allāh, forgive his hands Inclusive”*”
Imām An-Nawawī – rahimahullāh – recorded this Hadīth in his Shar’h on Sahīh Muslim under the Chapter Chapter Proof that the One who kills himself did not become Kāfir by so doing
And then said, commenting on the Hadith:
“In it is Proof for a great Precept with Ahlussunnah that whomsoever kills himself or commits a sin other than it and passes away without making Tawbah does not become Kāfir by so doing and cannot be guaranteed Hellfire. Rather, he is under the Will (of Allāh)”
We say:
And in it is proof that it is permissible to make Du’ā for forgiveness for such a one.
And Allāh knows best.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
