#7: ON WRITING ALLAH’S NAME IN CAPITALS
” Assalaamu ‘alaykum. Pls i have a question. May ALLAAH bless your knowledge. What have the contemporary scholars of the Ummah said about indicating the names of ALLAAH in capital letters amongst other words while writing or texting sentences?”
ANSWER
Wa alaykum salaam warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh
Alhamdulillaah! May Allah bless you too.
With regard to capital letters, it should be known that it is a tradition of written English to use capitals for the first alphabet of any word that represents a proper noun.
Therefore, in English writing, it will be wrong to write Allaah with all small letters.
Also, in written english, all capitals is used to show emphasis, signify stress syllables or to draw attention to certain words. For that reason, there is nothing wrong in writing Allaah all in capitals.
Many of the spoken-english Ulamaa make it clear that writing Allaah with all small letters is wrong, as a way of showing respect to Allaah’s name. But none of them insisted that Allaah must be written in all capitals. This is due to the distinct explanation we have made above.
It has come in the Hadith that a man was granted Jannah by Allaah – ta’aala – by the fact that he wrote the name of Allaah beautifully.
We seek Allah’s help and guidance, aameen.
