#704: Must a Woman conceal her beautification with the Khol from Non-Mahram Men?
QUESTION:
“I have a question…Please since it (Kohl) serves as beautification for women if used, does this also means it should be covered in order to avoid fitnah?
ANSWER:
Alhamdulillāh
The Ulamā differed slightly regarding the Kohl and it’s application for the woman whether it constitutes one of the beautifications that are regarded as being apparent or of those which are not. This is because in the wearing of the Niqāb, the majority of the Ulamā permit that the eyes are seen and the Kohl is applied to the eyes.
Shaykhu Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah – rahimahullāh – said:
“The Predecessors differed regarding the apparent beauty of women to two positions: Ibn Mas’ūd and those that concur with him said: it is the outer garment. Whereas Ibn ‘Abbās and those who agree with him said: it is what is on the face and hands such as Kohl and ring”
This he mentioned in Majmū’atu Al-Fatāwah
But what is stronger, as was mentioned by the ‘Allāmah Shaykh Muhammad Al-Amīn bn Muhammad Al-Mukhtār Ash-Shanqītī – rahimahullāh – in the ‘Adwā is the position of ‘Ibn Mas’ūd – radiyallāhu ‘anhu
This is because the eye lids themselves, when beautified can be a very great means of Fitnah.
That said, what is recommended for a woman is to avoid it’s application whenever she is leaving her home or in the presence of non-Mahram men.
And Allāh knows best.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
