#705: Can I be involve in Transactions that change Naira to Dollars?
QUESTION:
“Question. Assalamu alaikum Shaykh, pls Working as those who change Dollars in to naira with little profit (B/d change), is it an interest? Is it permitted in Islam ??Because some one close to me is about to start such job or business so I need ur advice pls???”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
There is nothing wrong with this transaction as long as the currencies are different and the exchange takes place in the same sitting and not done by way of postponment.
This is because the Rasūl – Salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam – said:
الذهب بالذهب والفضة بالفضة والبر بالبر والشعير بالشعير والتمر بالتمر والملح بالملح مثلا بمثل سواء بسواء يدا بيد فإذا اختلفت هذه الأصناف فبيعوا كيف شئتم إذا كان يدا بيد
“Gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates, salt for salt, like for like, same for same, hand to hand. If the types are different then sell however you like, so long as it is hand to hand.”
This is recorded by Imām Muslim from Ubadah bn As-Sāmit – radiyallāhu ‘anhu
And Allāh knows best
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
