#713: Can I purchase a Doll for the purpose of learning how to Plait Hair?
QUESTION:
“Assalamu aleikum. Please, is it allowed in Islam to purchase a dull for the purpose of using it to learn how to make hair?”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh.
Know, may Allāh be merciful unto us and you, that playing dolls for girls has been exempted by majority of the Ulamā from the ruling forbidding the possessing of images in the homes as long as the doll has no head or has head but has no facial attributes such as eyes, nose, mouth and ears. This is the position in the Mālikī, the Shāfi’ī and the Hanbalī Schools. And was mentioned by Qādī ‘Iyyādh, Imām An-Nawawī and Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisī as an exemption to the forbiddance of possessing Images.
If therefore you need a doll to learn that, there is nothing wrong with that provided it has no head or facial features and is not taken for use extravagantly.
Though, to avoid it is better.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
