#715: Can I visit a Relative that rented and Apartment from a Man that deals in Alcohol?
QUESTION:
“Please can I visit a relative that lives in a rented apartment belonging to a landlord that trades alchohol.”
ANSWER:
Alhamdulillāh, there is no Harām transaction between the relative that rented the apartment and his/her Landlord as far as the question goes.
Except that it would have been preferred for this Tenant to, right from the beginning patronise someone who is upright in Character and Dīn.
There is also no harm in visiting such a house.
If however you mean that the house, is annexed to the building where Alcohol is sold and traded, then there is no permissibility for the Tenant to rent and reside in such a house in the first place and it becomes Harām that you visit such a place too. And Allāh knows best.
This is because the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – said:
مَن كان يؤمن بالله واليوم الآخِر، فلا يقعُد على مائدةٍ يُشرب عليْها الخمْر
“Whomsoever believes in Allāh and the Last Day, let him not sit by a Table where Alcohol is drank”.
This was recorded by Imām Ahmad from Jābir bn ‘Abdillah – radiyallāhu ‘anhumā.
Imām Ibn Battāl – rahimahullāh – said in his Shar’h on Sahīh Al-Bukhārī:
“It is not right to be present at places of sin and Munkar, nor to sit in the company of it’s people upon it. Because this is a display of content with it. And whosoever adds to a number of people is among them.”
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
