#747: Ruling on Gatherings for Naming a New Born
747 QUESTION:
“Assalamu alaykum. Please what is the Islamic ruling on Naming Ceremony. Jazakumullahu khayran. Yes, I have read the ruling on Aqiqah. But what I want to precisely know is the celebration people do here, where people make food on the day, and invite people to come and eat. I’ve had some people say it is Bid’a. Kindly clarify”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh.
Know, may Allāh’s Blessings be upon us and you, that what is regarded as an Innovation is the gathering of people for the purpose of announcing the name of the Child and innovating other things together with it such as gathering those referred to as ‘alfas’ who would impose certain monies on the parents of the newborn and other relatives. It has not been established that this was done by the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – or by any of the Pious Predecessors.
As for gathering to celebrate (Walīmah), there is nothing wrong with this as a way of thanking Allāh Ta’ālā.
And Allāh knows best.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran
