#750: Can I make Wudhū in the Toilet or Bathroom

750 QUESTION:

“Assalamu Alaykum…If you live in a self contain apartment where the bathroom and toilet are together. My Question is can I make ablution in the bathroom/toilet closet?”

ANSWER:

Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.

The Ulamā generally preferred that the Wudhū be observed in very clean places so as to avoid Najāsah (impurities) while and after making the Wudhū and also so as to ward off the Wasāwis (whisperings) of the Shaytān for it is known that the Shayātīn prefer the places of filth such as the toilets and the bathrooms.

For this reason, our Ulamā generally consider it Makrūh to observe Wudhū in the bathroom or toilet except when necessary. While some of them apply this ruling only to toilets and bathrooms that are unclean, others consider it general to all toilets and bathrooms.
