#760: Ruling on sending Prayers on the Rasūl – Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam on the Days of Malwid and its Gatherings
760 QUESTION
“Question: What is the Islamic rules on sending blessings to our norble prophet salla llahu Ala I wasalam especially when people of innovation are in their innovative event e.g Maulud Nabyyi or were they are praising prophet wrongly?”
ANSWER:
Alhamdulillāh!
It is obligatory for a believer to avoid gatherings where sins are committed. One of the sins that a Muslim can commit is to innovate new things into the worship of Allāh that was not sanctioned by the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – and it is obligatory on a believer to avoid such gatherings unless by way of trying to correct the people who are engaged in that.
However, wherever a person finds himself, as long as the Name of the Rasūl – salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam – is mentioned, it is obligatory to send Salāt on him in accordance with the way he commanded us to.
It is important to note that sending Salāt upon him – salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam – is so important that some of the Fuqahā considered it Wājib anytime he is referred to, no matter how frequently it is repeated. This is the position of the Mālikī Imām Ibn ‘AbdilBarr and Ibn Battah of the Hanbalī School. Their evidence is the Hadīth recorded by Imām Abū Īsah At-Tirmidhī from Abū Hurayrah – radiyallāhu’anhu – that the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – said:
رغم أنف رجل ذكرت عنده، فلم يصل علي
“May the nose of the one in whose presence I was mentioned and didn’t send the Prayers on me be rubbed in the earth”
And for the reason of this Hadīth the Ulamā of Hadīth forbade the shortening of the Salāt on the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – like what some Muslims do today of writing pbuh, saw, saww and their likes.
It therefore matters not where you are when his name is mentioned, salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam.
This means that the Hukm of avoiding such places has nothing to do with the Hukm of sending the Salāt upon him.
We ask that Allāh guide us and you toward that which is best, amīn
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
11th Rājab 1440AH.
