#766: The Authenticity of the Hadith of the Punishment of One who Slaps His Wife

Assalamu alaikum my eminent scholars pls what is the authenticity of this hadith below…jazaka llahu khair

The Messenger of God (PBUH&HF) said:

“The man who slaps his wife , Allah will order to the owner of the hell slapping him in the face seventy times in hell fire”.

ANSWER:

Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.

Firstly, it is not permissible to shorten the Salutations to the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – by writing SAW, PBUH, SAWW, etc. This has been mentioned and disliked by the Imāms of Hadīth among whom are Al-Hāfidh Ibn As-Salāh in Ulūmu Al-Hadīth, As-Sakhāwī in Fat’hu Al-Mughīth, As-Suyūtī in Tadrību Ar-Rāwī, and others.

Some of the Ulamā also mentioned that whosoever does that will not get the reward attributed with the Salāt. Shaykh Muhammad bn Sālih Al-‘Uthaymīn – rahimahullāh – mentioned that it was better to not write anything after the mention of the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – name and to leave it to the reader to say in his conscience than to write an abbreviation. So, desist from that, may Allāh illumine your heart.

Then, as for this Hadīth. Know, may Allāh illumine your heart, that the book you quoted from is a well known Shī’ite book. For the Mustadrak Al-Wasā’il is an authorship of Hussain An-Nūrī At-Tabarsī who passed away 1320 years after the Hijrah.

Why is it important to note that this compilation is a compilation of the Shi’ites?

This is because the Ulamā of Hadīth have established that the Shī’ites are the worst of liars when it comes to Hadīth. This is known to any Student of Knowledge and established as such.

For the Shī’ites told a lot of lies and fabricated a lot of Ahādith and placed them on the tongue of the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – in order to propagate their dirty Creed and methodology.

Shaykhu Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah – Rahimahullāh – said in Minhāju Sunnati An-Nabawiyyah:

“And for this reason, they are the worst of liars among the Sects attributed to the Unmah. And there is no sect or band that attributes itself to the Qiblah that is worse than them with regards to lieing, nor more betruthing of lies, or more belieing of truth than them. And the attributes of hypocrisy are more apparent in them… And whosoever has experienced relationship with them knows how much they possess these attributes (of the Munāfiqūn) and this is why they use what they call Tuqiyyah which is an attribute of the Munāfiqūn and the Yahūd, they use that against the Muslims…”

Then he said:

“And whosoever looks at the Books of Al-Jar’hu Wa At-Ta’adīl which were authored on the names of the Narrators of Hadīth and their attributes, like the books of Yahyah bn Ma’īn, Al-Bukhārī, Abū Ahmad bn ‘Adiyy, Ad-Dāraqutnī, Ibrāhim bn Ya’qūb Al-Jūzajānī, Ya’qūb bn Is’hāq Al-Fasawī, Ahmad bn Sālih Al-Ujlī, Al-‘Uqaylī, Muhammad bn ‘Abdillah bn ‘Ammār Al-Mawsalī, Al-Hākim An-Naisabūrī, Al-Hāfidh ‘AbdulGhaniyy bn Sa’īd Al-Masrī, and the likes of them who are the Masters and Experts of Hadīth who know the reality of the status of Narrators will realise that the lies that are known with the Shī’ites are much more pronounced than is known with any other sect or band of people…”

This is a known fact and may Allāh save us from their evils, amīn.

As for slapping the face, the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – generally forbade that to anyone. Imām Muslim rahimahullāh recorded in the Sahīh from Jābir bn’ Abdillah – radiyallāhu’anhu – saying:

نهى رسول اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عن الضَّرْبِ في الْوَجْهِ

“The Messenger of Allāh salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam – forbade hitting the face”

Imām An-Nawawī mentioned in the commentary of this Hadīth in the Minhāj:

“As for hitting the face, it is generally forbidden that it be done to any animal that deserves respect: whether human, donkey, horse, camel, ox, sheep or other than these. But to a human it is worse. This is because it (the face) is the coming together of the entire beauty (of the being) and even if this hitting is gentle, it may leave behind it traces of the hitting, it may damage it and may hurt some of the organs.”

Then as for slapping wives, Imām Abū Dāwud Sulaymān As-Sijistānī – Rahimahullāh mentioned in his Sunan that the Companion Mu’āwiyyah bn Haydata Al-Qushayrī said:

I said: O Messenger of Allāh! What is the right of the wives of one of us upon him?”

He said:

أن تطعمها إذا طعمت وتكسوها إذا اكتسيت أو اكتسبت ولا تضرب الوجه ولا تقبح ولا تهجر إلا في البيت

“That you feed her as you feed, that you cloth her as you cloth or as you earn. And that you do not hit the face nor curse and that you do not avoid her by (sending her away) from the house”

So the forbiddance of hitting the face is known and established in the Sunnah not only for wives but for all of the Creation of Allāh.

As for the punishment that is mentioned in the Hadith that you quoted then this has not been recorded in any Hadīth that is sound and Authentically recorded from the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam.

We have alluded to the lies of the Shī’ites that we may avoid and distant ourselves from their books and writings.

We ask Allāh to grant us a knowledge that is illuminating. Amīn.
