#774: Ruling on doing Walīmah of Nikāh Years after the `Aqd
774 QUESTION
ON DOING THE WALĪMAH OF NIKĀH YEARS AFTER THE ‘AQD
“I got married 5years ago (aqeed), hope there is nothing wrong by doing the walimah after so long, and another thing is : am a Yoruba lady, in our culture we normally have list of bridal materials nd my zaouj is yet to bring them, hence the more reason why I feel its important to do the walimah! kindly share your opinion”
ANSWER:
Alhamdulillāh!
Know that the essence of the Walīmah of Nikāh is to celebrate the ‘Aqd (Marriage contract) according to some of the ‘Ulamā, or the Wedding Night (Consummation Night) according to others. Therefore there is no benefit in a Walimah that is done years after the ‘Aqd and the Consummation of the ‘Aqd. Doing that is not in line with the Sunnah of the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam.
As for the bridal things that you refer to, they return to the custom of your people and are not conditions for the authenticity of Marriage or the authenticity of the Walīmah.
That said, you need not refer to such traditions after five years of marriage neither should your husband.
We ask Allāh for a knowledge that is illuminating, amīn.
Jazakumullāhu Khayran
Bārakallāhu Fīkum.
