#794: Ruling on Inflating the Prices of Commodities in Ramadān
794. QUESTION
“Assalamu alaykum warahamatulahi wabarakatuh. May Allah guide us to His obedience. Please I will like to understand further what is upon a person who inflate the price of a commodity because of its high demand in Ramadan ?JazaakalLahu khairan”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Amīn, and may Allāh accept all our Du’ā, amīn.
As for inflating the prices of commodities intentionally to take advantage of Muslims in the times of need whether in Ramadān or outside it is Harām by the consensus of the Ulamā.
Prices may only be increased legitimately if there are economic factors that increase the cost of production, transportation or purchase. But to take advantage of people unduly is Harām without a doubt.
Let those who do that fear Allāh and beware of a punishment from Allāh on behalf of His Servants on the Day of Qiyāmah.
And Allāh has said:
وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ بِغَيْرِ مَا اكْتَسَبُوا فَقَدِ احْتَمَلُوا بُهْتَانًا وَإِثْمًا مُّبِينًا
“And those who hurt the believers men and women with other than what they have earned with their own hands have indeed incurred upon themselves error and a clear sin.”
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazakumullāhu Khayran.
29th Ramadān, 1440AH.
