#796: Ruling on Zakātu al-Fitr
796. QUESTION:
IF I GIVE ZAKĀTU AL-FITR TO A FAMILY AND EVENTUALLY OBSERVED ĪD THERE, CAN I EAT OF THE FOOD I GAVE THEM?
“Asalam alaikum, if u giv zakat li fitri to a family and eventually it is DAT place u want to do d festival can one eat out of d food, of which u know that is what they will cook”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh
As for this, what behoves of you is to be sure firstly that the family to which you gave the Zakāt are of those that deserve it and are eligible to have it in accordance with the principle behind the Zakāt which is to cater for the Masākin (Needy). Do not also forget that among the Needy, there are those who are the most in need. For this reason, the Fuqahā agreed that the one who is most in need is first in priority over the one who is more in need and who is in turn higher in priority than the one who is just in need. When you look at that you see that, in your community, it is obligatory upon you to know who needs it the most and give it to that person.
Once you have done that and are sure you have given the right person, it doesn’t harm you if you end up eating from what you gave them, for it is a Zakāt to them and what they gave you is an entertainment for the guest. You are the guest and it is encouraged that you eat in the home of your brother if he offers you.
And Allāh knows best
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazakumullāhu Khayran.
