#801: Ruling on missing Jumu`ah because One does not understand the Language of the Khutbah
801. QUESTION
“As-salaamu alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuhu. Good evening. I have a question. Na’am. … A sister schools in a place where she doesn’t understand the local language there… Is it appropriate to miss jum’ah because of it… As she doesn’t also understand Arabic and basically doesn’t understand anything said”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh!
Know, may Allāh illumine my heart and yours, that it is the agreement of the Ulamā that Jumu’ah is not obligatory upon women. Imam Ibn Al-Mundhir – rahimahullāh – mentioned this in his book Al-Ijmā.
Therefore, even when she understands what is been said, it wasn’t Wājib upon her as a Muslimah. However some of the Ulamā encourage it due to what it entails of rewards and spiritual discipline and this is not prefixed on her understanding the Khutbah or not. This means that she may be encouraged to attend it even if she doesn’t understand the language as long as it is free of Fitnah.
Also, a Muslim woman must not stay in ignorance and must find other means of learning her Dīn in ways that do not expose her to Fitnah.
And Allāh knows best.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazakumullāhu Khayran.
2nd Shawwal, 1440AH.
