#814: Ruling on Intention in Fasting

814. QUESTION

CAN I MAKE INTENTION TO OBSERVE THE SHAWWAL FAST THIS MORNING SINCE I HAVE NOT EATEN ANYTHING?

“SUBHANALLAH! I just got the reminder this morning. Never knew Shaawal has gone this far. Can I continue fasting because I’m yet to take anything to prevent from doing so this morning. Though I didn’t sleep with the intention.”

ANSWER:

Alhamdulillāh, may Allāh make the fast easy for you. Amīn.

The majority of the Ulamā have agreed that it is permissible to make the intention to observe the voluntary fast in the morning of it’s fasting day as opposed to the Fast of Ramadān which must be intended for before the appearance of Fajr.

13th Shawwal, 1440AH.
