#817: Ruling on a Wife wearing Her Husband`s Clothes at Home

817. QUESTION

“Salam Alaykum Akhi,, It’s obvious and clear that it’s haram for a man to dress like a woman and vice versa,. My question is that, is it permissible for a wife to just wear his husband shirt, trouser, or short inside their house for fun, or maybe doing chores etc”

ANSWER:

Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.

Alhamdulillāh!

We responded in Question 749 on our Telegram Channel that there is nothing wrong in this and it may be encouraged within couples if it increases the bond of love and affection.

However it should be added that if this dressing makes her look like a man or is of the dresses that are specific to men only, it won’t be permissible for her to do that. This is due to the Generality of the Hadīth in which the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – as was recorded by Imām Al-Bukhārī cursed men that emulate women and women that emulate men. And the one recorded by Imām Abū Dāwud Sulaymān As-Sijistānī rahimahullāh that the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – cursed men that wore women clothes and women that wore men clothes.

Please note that the curse mentioned in the later Hadīth is prefixed on the first Hadīth as was mentioned by Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalānī Rahimahullāh, meaning that this curse relates to clothes that are specific to one of the sexes and is not the custom of the other sex to wear, and or makes one sex look like the other.

It is apparent that if a wife wears her husband’s shirts, nickers or trousers within the house, there won’t be harm in this as this neither makes her look like a man nor is this specific to men mostly, and Allāh knows best.

But a husband can not wear his wife’s skirt for instance within the house for very obvious reasons mentioned above. It is of the specific dresses of women mostly.
