#818: Ruling on adding Wa Al-Maghfirah to the Taslim
818. QUESTION
“Wa’alaikumussalaam warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh walmaghfirah . Pls addmin is it right to add walmaghfirah on the tasleem when greeting or replying d tasleem”
ANSWER:
Alhamdulillāh!
Know, may Allāh illumine your heart and soul, that the Ulamā differed as to the additions of Wa Al-Maghfirah, Wa Tayyibu As-Salawāt, Wa Ridwānuhu and it’s likes. This difference is based firstly on the weakness of most of the Ahādith that Implied that some of the Companions added that, and their different interpretations of the verse in the Qur’ān where Allāh said:
وَإِذَا حُيِّيْتُم بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّواْ بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا أَوْ رُدُّوهَا إِنَّ اللّهَ كَانَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَسِيبًا}[النساء:86]
“And when you are greeted, the respond by greeting with that which is better (than what you have been greeted with) or at least respond in equal. Allāh is indeed a thorough Recorded of everything”
While some held that it ends with Wabarakātuh and every addition after it is unfounded, others held that additions may be made on Wabarakātuh.
The later position was favoured by Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalānī, Ash-Shawkānī, Al-Mubārakfūrī, and others.
The former position is favoured by the majority of the Ulamā anyway.
