#83. THE WUDHU OF THE ONE WHO HAD AN EYE SURGERY
“Salam alaykum my ustaz in th house…How will someone that did eye surgery, perform ablution, the patient’s were asked not to put water on their face for the next two weeks”
ANSWER
Wa alaykum salaam warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh
Alhamdulillaah!
Whosoever has an ailment or burn that will cause a discomfort for him if the water of ablution touches it is allowed a Rukhsah (dispensation) to the extent of his discomfort.
If the burn, wound or ailment is such that applying water on the face in its entirety will cause severe difficulty, then you are permitted in the Shari’ah to make Tayammum by the consensus of the Ulamaa as a Rukhsah.
However, if the wound still allows you to wash some part of the face despite the surgery wounds, then some of the Fuqahaa allow that you are to wash of the face only that which is not affected by the water of the Wudhu.
The evidence for this is what Allaah – ta’aala – said:
وَإِن كُنتُم مَّرْضَى أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ أَوْ جَاء أَحَدٌ مِّنكُم مِّن الْغَآئِطِ أَوْ لاَمَسْتُمُ النِّسَاء فَلَمْ تَجِدُواْ مَاء فَتَيَمَّمُواْ صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا {النساء: 43}.
“And if you were sick, on a journey, or one of you had just come out of the privy, or you have had relations with women and you do not find water, then observe the Tayammum from pure earth.”
Suratu An-Nisaa: 43
Imaam An-Nawawi _rahimahullaah_ said in ‘Al-Majmu‘:
“If the Illah (causative reason) that forms the Rukhsah (Dispensation) that allows for Tayammum prevents the use of water for all of the parts of the body that must be washed for the Tahaarah, then he must observe the Tayammum on all the parts. But if it only prevents him from washing some parts and doesn’t stop him from the other parts, then he must wash that which is possible and make Tayammum for what is left.”
