Q&A (Fatwa)

#844: Ruling on standing up to greet others

844. QUESTION:

“Assalamu alaykum

Please what is the Islamic ruling on standing up to greet someone such as what happens in many schools where students stand up to greet their teachers when the latter walks into a class”

ANSWER:

Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh

Alhamdulillāh

As for this, we have responded to it in Question 4 in the Telegram Channel where we stated that though the strongest position is that it is disliked, the Ulamā differed on it. And we referenced that it wasn’t the practice of the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam- and the Sahābah, ridwānullāh ‘alayhim. Kindly refer to it.

Bārakallāhu Fīkum

Jazākumullāhu Khayran
