#848: Ruling on placing the Qur’ān on a Paining Part of the Body as a way of Seeking Relief
848. QUESTION:
“Assalamu alaikum,Please I have a question? If you are sick or feeling pains in some of your parts and you place Quran on it is it bad”
ANSWER:
Wa alaykumu salām wa warahmatullāh wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh
It’s important to know that the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – taught us how to treat illnesses and how to take care of ourselves. His guidance with respect to these have been treated by the Ulamā in the books.
An example of this is the illustrous book Zādu Al-Ma’ād by the Imām Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah rahimahullāh.
Placing the Qur’ān on an ailing or painful place is not of them and we advise against that.
Know also, may Allāh be merciful to you, that the Dīn permits all forms of treatments provided they do not involve treatments with what is Harām. And we mentioned in Question 842 that all Medical Interventions and Cures are Permissible provided they do not transgress the limits of Allāh. Therefore what we advice the brother or sister who asked the question here to do is to seek Medical help in his pain or sickness.
On the Day of Uhud when the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – was seriously Injured, he sought medical help. He didn’t seek to place written copies of the Qur’ān on it. This was mentioned by the companion Sahl bn Sa’ad – radiyallāhu ‘anhu – as was recorded in the Sahihayn
“Prophet’s face was injured, his tooth was broken and the helmet he was wearing was smashed on his head. Fatimah Radiyallāhu Anha, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah Salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam was washing the blood off while Ali Radiyallāhu Anhu was pouring water on her hands with his shield. When Fatimah realized that the bleeding could not stop, she took a burned mat (of palm leaves) and inserted the ash in the wound of Allah’s Messenger and the bleeding stopped”.
This was a known treatment that nurses used in the time of the Rasūl-salallāhu alayhi wasallam- and it is known that Fatimah – radiyallāhu ‘anhā – his daughter was a nurse.
Commenting on this, Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah rahimahullāh said:
“The ashes of burnt palm leaves are very effective in stopping bleeding, because it is a strong drying agent and because it has the least burning effect (on the exposed skin). Other strong drying remedies have a burning effect on the skin and cause the blood to be irritated and the bleeding to intensify. Further, when the ashes of palm leaves are applied alone or mixed with vinegar in a bleeding nose, it will stop the bleeding.”
If in the place of the ashes of burnt palm leaves today what is in use is Iodine and GV, it is for a Muslim who experiences same to seek that Medical Cure and not to resort to placing the Mus’haf on the wounded place.
And Allāh knows best.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum.
