#853: The Virtues of going to Jumu`ah Early
853. QUESTION:
Can someone explains the hadith 814 of Imam Bukhari (Rahimahullah), it was narrated by Abu Hurayrah (Rodiallahu Anihum) regarding going early to jumaat prayer.
ANSWER
Alhamdilillahi!
Know verily – may the blessings of Allāh be upon you – that, some Ahādīth has been narrated concerning the virtues of attending the Jumu’ah at the early hour.
Some ulama upheld that the time begins after the Fajr prayers while others maintain that it begins immediately when the sunrises.
In this context, it was reported from Abū Hurairah Radiyallāhu anhu who said:
The Rasūl salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:
“Any person who takes a bath on Friday like the bath of Janāba and then goes for the prayer (in the first hour i.e. early), it is as if he had sacrificed a camel (in Allah’s cause); and whoever goes in the second hour it is as if he had sacrificed a cow; and whoever goes in the third hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a horned ram; and if one goes in the fourth hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a hen; and whoever goes in the fifth hour then it is as if he had offered an egg. When the Imam comes out (i.e. starts delivering the Khutba), the angels present themselves to listen to the Khutba.”
Transmitted by Imām Al-bukhārī#881 and Imām Muslim#850.
A similar Hadīth was narrated in Muwatta by Imām Mālik#227 from Abū Hurairah Radiyallāhu anhu who said:
“Any person who takes a bath on Friday like the bath of janāba and then goes in the first part of the time, it is as if he had offered up a camel. If he goes in the second part of the time, it is as if he had offered up a cow. If he goes in the third part of the time, it is as if he had offered up a horned ram. If he goes in the fourth part of the time, it is as if he had offered up a hen. If he goes in the fifth part of the time, it is as if he had offered up an egg. And when the Imām comes out, the angels present themselves to listen to the Khutba”.
Al-Muwatta Mālik#227.
It is also reported from Aws Ibn Aws Radiyallāhu anhu who said: The Rasūl salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:
Whoever performs Ghusl on Friday, and bathes completely, and goes early, arriving early, gets close and listens and is silent, there will be for him in every step he takes the reward of a year of fasting and standing (in prayer).”
Transmitted by Imām At-tirmidhī (496). Imām An-Nasāī(1381), Abū Dāwūd(345), Ibn Mājah(1087). And Shaykh Al-Albānī declared it as Sahīh in Sahīh An-Nasāī.
These Ahādīth indicate:
1). The Reward of going to Jumu’ah at the first, second, third, fourth and fifth hour.
2). Disparities in reward for every hour.
3). Encouragement towards going to Jumu’ah mosque at the early hour.
That said, looking at our situation, we found that majority of the people are negligent regarding the Sunnah of attending Jumu’ah mosque at early hour and utilizing the period for different ibādat be it the recitation of Qur’an and Zikr.
Therefore, let’s hasten to revive this great Sunnah by practising it and encouraging others to do same so that we may attain the reward mentioned in the above Ahādīth and the reward of the one who revives a Sunnah.
Allāhu A’alām
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
