#861: Ruling on Women following the Funeral Procession
861. QUESTION:
“Assalamu alaykum…and may Allah strengthen those enlightening us and may He increase in them knowledge and guidance.
I would like to know about the rulings on Muslim women (dressed according to Islamic injuction) following a corpse to a cemetery. I have always been told it is not permissible but would like to see a Quranic/Hadith back up on that with explanation. Thank you.”
ANSWER:
Wa ‘Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
May Allāh answer your Prayers and grant you sound Knowledge and Understanding, amīn.
As for Women following the Corpse to the grave, the majority of the Fuqahā hold that it is Makrūh and this is the Strong Position in this matter. Though some of them considered it Harām.
Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisī mentioned in Al-Mughnī:
“And it is Makrūh that women follow the Procession carrying the Dead. This is due to what was recorded from Umm ‘Atiyyah she said ‘We were forbidden from following the Janā’iz but it wasn’t stressed upon us’. Agreed upon (as Sahīh by Al-Bukhārī and Muslim). And this was mentioned by Ibn Mas’ūd, Ibn ‘Umar, Abū ‘Umāmah, ‘Ā’ishah, Masrūq, Al-Hasan, An-Nakha’ī, Al-Awzā’ī and Is’hāq.”
