#874: Ruling on Specific Times for Salāt
874. QUESTION:
‘Assuming the beginning of Dhur prayer for today is 12:28pm in my State, when are we going to Call for prayer and Iqamah. And if the beginning of Isha prayer is 7:32pm, when are we going to call for prayer and Iqamah.’
ANSWER:
Know, may Allāh illumine your heart, that the making of the Adhān is not subject to these clocks and the time the show, but to the indicators that the Rasūl -salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam – mentioned that must he observed before the time is said to have set in.
Ibn Raslān – rahimahullāh – said in Safwatu Az-Zubad:
“The time of Dhuhr is from the movement (of the sun) from it’s Zenith, until a shadow is just above the height of it’s object
Then with that comes in the time of ‘Asr, and it’s best (time) is between this and when the Shadow is twice the size of it’s object
Its permissible to observe it till before sun sets, and the time of Maghrib sets in with that
And it’s time continues in accordance with the earlier position (of Ash-Shāfi’ī), till Ishā that comes in when the twilight vanishes
And the span of Ishā is till the true Dawn appears, when it strikes and brightens the horizons
And the best period is the first third (of the night), and it is permissible (to observe it) till the True Dawn
And by that has set in time of Sub’h and it’s best time is it’s Isfār (when the Dawn light has reached all part of the horizon), it is permissible till it’s Idbār (when the Dawn is been pushed away by the sun)
Its recommended to hasten to observe the Salāt at the earliest time, for the first hour of the Time is attached to the Indicators (of the time of the Salāt)”
The Ulamā are agreed on these spans of time except that they disagree on the best time for it to be made within the respective spans of time.
The exemption to this is Salātu Al-‘Isha for the stronger position is that it’s time expires at midnight. In the Hadith recorded by Imām Muslim in the Sahīh from ‘Abdullah bn ‘Umar – radiyallāhu ‘anhumā – the Rasūl -salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam said
“The time of ‘Ishā is till half of the night”
If it has become clear to you that the intervals of each Salāt are as we have stated above, then it becomes apparent to you that the time of the clock that is fixed solely depends on the agreement of that Muslim community on the times they intend to gather, and make the Iqamah. They are commanded to observe their Salāt within the time intervals referred to by us in the above.
The observance of Adhān should be once the time sets on while the Iqamah is the convenience of the community based on what they agreed among themselves. But as we have said, the best time of every Salāt is immediately it’s time has set in except for Ishā where a delay is recommended in accordance with the Sunnah.
And Allāh knows best
