#879: Ruling on applying Grants in Harām-Income Foundations
879. QUESTION:
“Question: Assalaamualeikum, pls what is the ruling on applying for grants from foundations whose source of income is Haram. E.g the the recent kick start Nigeria grant under the Nigeria breweries foundation. Jazaakumullahu khoiran.”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh!
It is not permissible to seek for grants from such companies because their sources of income is clearly Harām.
What is required of a Muslim is to run from what Allāh has forbidden and to distant his family and everyone he loves from same. How then will a Muslim who knows this apply for a grant from such a company.
The position held by the Ulamā as mentioned by Al-‘Adawī Al-Mālikī in his Hāshiyah, and in Al-Iqnā’ is that any wealth that is Harām in it’s entirety must be avoided and it is not permissible to relate with that person by way of depending on him.
There is then, no difference between an individual and an organization in this case.
And Allāh knows best
