#887: Ruling on Stepping on a picture f Ka`abah
887. QUESTION:
“Questions Assalamu alikum Sheik, What is the Islamic ruling on matching the كعبة (k’ba) drown on praying mate or else where or drowning Allah’s name on a passage where people pass or pillow e.t.c”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh
Know, O beloved one, that a Masjid or Ka’abah is one of the non living things that are permissible to be drawn and illustrated. There is nothing wrong in drawing them as long as they do not contain images of living things.
Second, know that the Fuqahā have discouraged the illustrations of anything on a Prayer Mat or in the Masjid that may distract from the Salāt.
It has been recorded by Imām Al-Bukhārī and Muslim in their Sahīh from ‘Aishah radiyallāhu ‘anhā that once the Rasūl -salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam – observed Salāt in a Shirt of his that had some inscriptions on it, he got a little distracted and ordered after the Salāt that the shirt be taken away and replaced with that that was free of any inscriptions.
Ibn Daqīq Al-‘Īd mentioned in the Ihkām that one of the derivations from this Hadīth made by the Fuqahā is that it is disliked to allow any thing into the Masjid that has the ability to distract. That means that observing Salāt on such Prayer Mats should be avoided for this reason.
As for stepping on it, we have not come across anything to the effect that it is not permissible given the fact that it is only an inscription and Allāh knows best.
Then, regarding inscribing the Name of Allāh on a passage where people pass or on a pillow, this is a disregard and a disrespect for the Name of Allāh and should be avoided emphatically. In the doing of this is clearly a disregard for the Name of Allāh.
Allāh Ta’ālā said:
ذَلِكَ وَمَنْ يُعَظِّمْ شَعَائِرَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنْ تَقْوَى الْقُلُوبِ
“Thus, whosoever holds in hight esteem the Symbols of Allāh, then has depicted a thing among the signs of Taqwah in the Heart”
Imam As-Sa’adī rahimahullāh said commenting on this verse:
“Because, honouring the Symbols of Allāh emanates from the Taqwah of the Heart…”
This is a statement among the Statements that necessitate an opposite as it is known in Usūl.
What we mean is that the refusal to honour the Name of Allāh and other Symbols of Islām emanates from a Heart that is bereft of Taqwah, and we seek refuge from Allāh in that.
