#893: Ruling on taking advantage of Yuletide Slash Prices for Purchase of Items
893. QUESTION:
“Salam aleikum. Please can a Muslim differ his shopping to a black Friday when prices will be slashed. Jazakallahu khairan as I anticipate a prompt response.”
ANSWER:
Wa alaykumu salām wa warahmatullah wabarakātuh.
As for the Black Friday, it is referred to as the Friday that follows the Thanksgiving Day. It is referred to as Black Friday according to Wikipedia because of the traffic that happens on that Day when people rush to shopping. It is mentioned that traffic accidents are usually high on that Day. Allāh knows best.
As for the Thanksgiving Day, it is said to be a Day to thank the Almighty after the Harvests. Some have mentioned that it has religious roots. But what is apparent for a Muslim is that these Days, their selection as celebration days, their veneration and their specialty are the doings of Kuffār. And it is not permissible for a Muslim to follow them in holding them dear.
This is same for the Christmas, Boxing day and down to the New Year and generally the Yuletide. It is not Permissible for a Muslim to see them as special Days or to hold them in any form of veneration.
As for making use of the opportunity of the Price Slashes and coupons that happen within this period, and to shop within it, some Ulamā have also considered this impermisible. Their reason for this is that since the period is known for the Kuffār and they make this Slashes probably to increase Sales within it, it is not permissible to partake in such promotions.
This reason is unclear to us. This is because what a Muslim is simply doing is to purchase at a cheap price which is made available to him in that period.

In essence, what we see, and Allāh knows best is that, a Muslim who owns a Shop should not treat this period in any way special and must not slash his prices for the purpose of this. However, a Muslim individual who wants to purchase goods may purchase within this period at cheap prices.
