#925: On The Reconciliation Of The Number Of Days In Hijrah And Gregorian Callender With Regards To Weaning A Child
Assalaam Alaykum wa rahmatuLLah wa barakatuh. But one of the Ummus said she was told that 2yrs hijri=1year 9months How true is that? She was told this when she asked of the 2yrs breastfeeding that Islam recommended
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salam Warahmatullah Wabarakātuh.
Hijrah Year is only 10-12 days less Gregorian. And one year more after 30 years. 1 year 9 months is 90 days less and that’s wrong.
Then, on what Islam recommend of breastfeeding days, we responded to this question in detail before on IslamNode. Refer to question 781 on our Telegram Channel.
Therefore from the Answer we provided in the Question referred above it can be seen that the Fuqaha have not consensed that it is a recommendation. Rather, they differed.
And were it to be a recommendation, it will be 2 years.
It appears to me however that the one who passed the said fatwa to her refers to the position of Ibn ‘Abbas albeit with a distortion. This is because Ibn’ Abbas holds that the completion of 2 years refers only to the child who was born after 6 months in pregnancy. His reason is that Allah mentioned 30 months as the number of months for nursing. Nursing for 30 months refers to both pregnancy and breast feeding. Ibn ‘Abbas reconciled both by saying 2 years (24 months) breastfeeding for the 6 months in pregnancy and 21 Months (1 year, 9 months) for the 9-months-pregnancy baby.
Then, if that were to be the case, the implication the person who said that tried to make is based on error. For Ibn ‘Abbas here refers to Hawlayn and not a general rule of what Hijrah years equals in Gregorian years.
As you can see, the Majority of the Fuqaha saw error in the position of Ibn ‘Abbas.
Allah knows best.
