#160: Ruling on the Wudhū of the One who passes Wind Often
*QUESTION*
*ON THE WUDHŪ OF ONE THAT PASSES WIND SO OFTEN*
_”As salamu alaikum wa rahamatullah wa barokatuh…Everytime that I perform ablution, I feel the urge to pass wind. Every time that I set to pray also I feel the same. Sometimes it’s when I’m on solah, it’s almost everytime. In fact for most of the time. I’ve once asked and I was told that’s a disease and I may just pass the wind and continue. I ve never find the answer so comfortable. Sometimes I renew ablution and at other times I just hold it and continue with prayer.”_
*ANSWER*
Wa alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh
Alhamdulillāh.
Beloved one, if you are certain that this is your condition, then you need not feel uncomfortable with the fatwa that was given to you. This is because, the one who finds it difficult to control his wind has been given the _Rukhsa_ (dispensation) to combine two Salāt with one wudhū if the incessant wind allows him that, and to perform wudhū for each Salāt if the frequency of the wind allows for that. If however, the frequency of the wind is such that he cannot even maintain the Wudhū for the period it takes to observe a single Salāt, then his situation is like the one who suffers from inability to control urine and may not terminate his Salāt for the passage of the wind so as to renew his Wudhū *as long as this release of wind was not intentional*.
Shaykhu Al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah – rahimahullāh – said in the Majmū’ā:
: فمن لم يمكنه حفظ الطهارة مقدار الصلاة فإنه يتوضأ ويصلي ولا يضره ما خرج منه في الصلاة، ولا ينتقض وضوؤه بذلك باتفاق الأئمة، وأكثر ما عليه أن يتوضأ لكل صلاة
_”Whosoever is not able to preserve his Tahārah for the period of Salāt, then he should observe Wudhū and observe Salāt and what comes out of him while in Salāt does not harm him. And by the Concensus of the Imams, his Wudhū does not become terminated by virtue of that. The highest of what is obligatory on him in that situation is to make a Wudhū for each Salāt.”_
That said, it is important to note that most people that suffer from incessant passing of wind actually suffer from the _Wasāwis_ (whispers) of Iblīs. Therefore, you need to be very sure that in actual fact, what comes out of you is wind and not an imagination. If you are sure, then the verdict we have presented above holds and you should feel very comfortable with it as it is the consensus of all of the Imams as Shaykhu Al-Islam mentioned.
