#216: Ruling on Menstruating Women Attending Jumu`ah
QUESTION
CAN MENSTRUATING WOMEN ATTEND JUMU’AH?
As-Salaam Alaykum. Please, I know of those Ahaadeeth that encourage even menstruating women to go to the Eid ground on the day of Eid. Any there any such Ahaadeeth with respect to Jumu’ah salaat? Or, is it the case that those same Ahaadeeth that are used with regards to Eid salaat are still the same applying to the Jumu’ah salaat?JazaakumuLLaahu khairan, wa BaarakAllaahu feekum.
ANSWER:
Alhamdulillaah!
It is very true that there is a hadith that encourage menstruating women to attend the Eid praying ground and to come out, but not to observe the Salaat.
The Hadith is narrated by the Female Companion: Umm ‘Atiyya – radiyallaahu ‘anha – and recorded by both Imam Al-Bukhaari and Imaam Muslim, she said:
“The Messenger of Allaah – salallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam – commanded us (women) to come out for the Salaat of the two Eid: those of us that are married and the virgins that remain behind the veils. And he commanded those that are menstruating to avoid the prayer grounds of the Muslims.”
What that means, as the Ulamaa explained, is that the menstruating women must also come to the Eid ground but must not join in the observance of the Salaat.
However, there is no Hadith that encourages menstruating women to attend the Jum’a Salaat. And that is because Jum’a was never made obligatory upon the muslimah right from the onset.
Imaam Ahmad bn Raslaan Ash-Shaafi’i said in ‘Safwatu Az-Zubad’:
وركعتان فرضها لمؤمن * كلف حر ذكر مستوطن
ذي صحة…
“It (i.e. the Juma’a) is two raka’aat which is obligatory on a believer who is legally an adult, free, male, resident and healthy…”
Allaahu A’alam!
