#281: Ruling on Greeting the One Eating

Question

Assalamu alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuhu.
Please is there any hadith or ayat that says someone shouldn’t pronounce salam to person/people eating?
Bissalam.

ANSWER

Wa alaikum salaam Wa Rahmatullah Wa barakatuh, as regarding not making salam to the eating person, then, there is no tradition that we know that has prevented that.

What we know about this topic, is the statement of imam an nawawi in his book al-adhkaar; where be said: … If a person is eating and has food in his mouth, if someone greets him in this situation, he does not deserve an answer. But if it whilst he is eating but he does not have food in his mouth, then there is nothing wrong in giving him salam, and he has to respond.

And Allah knows best.
