#287: Ruling on Istihādhah and Fasting

Question

A sister just finished her menstruation and took her bath so that she can fast, unfortunately before dhur prayer she saw a drop and she took her bath again is that fast valid or not?

ANSWER

Before she took her bath, if she saw the sign of purity, then she will disregard this drop and perform wudoo for salatul dhuhr without observing the bath again.

The scholars have mentioned that signs of purity are either the emission of a whitish discharge or by experiencing complete dryness.

If however, purity was not properly established before the bath was performed, then she has to regard the drop as part of her menses.

If however the normal period has elapsed then she will have to try to detect if the nature of the drop is different from the nature of the blood of menses. Either by its colour of by the smell.

If no difference was discovered, then it will be regarded as part of her menses. Otherwise, it will be disregarded and her fast is valid.

All these are based upon the hadith that Abu Dawood transmitted from Umm ‘Atiyyah who said: “We did not regard brownish or yellowish discharge after the period ended as being anything that mattered.” classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood. The Imam al-Bukhaari also narrated the same with the words: “We did not regard brownish and yellowish discharge as anything that mattered.”

And Allah knows best.
