Assalamualeikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh
What age can circumcision be done for a child Islamically
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salam Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuh.
Alhamdulillah!
As for circumcision, then the Ruling of it, in accordance to preponderance is that it is Waajib for males and recommended based on tradition for females if done lightly and not extreme. We have explained the ruling of circumcision in detail in our answer to Question 211 on the Telegram Channel, you may refer to it. https://t.me/INQAArchive/231
As for the time, then there is nothing sacrosanct that has come regarding the time and age of the child for him to be circumcised
Ibn Al-Mundhir mentioned that there is nothing specific in the Sunnah regarding that.
However what is known is that since the circumcision is obligatory, the Precept in Islam is that obligations are not obligatory until the age of discernment (Bulugh) is attained by the child. That said, the overwhelming position of the Fuqahaa is that circumcision is not Obligatory until the child reaches the age of Bulugh though they recommended doing it earlier in the life of the child.
Imam An-Nawawi said in Al-Majmuu’u:
“It is recommended that the Wali should circumcise the young born during his early years. This is because it is much easier for him (the child) ”
There are Ahaadith that were recorded mentioning that the Rasul salallahu alayhi wasallam circumcised Hassan and Hussain on their 7th days. All the Hadith in this regard are weak.
And Allah knows best
