Q&A (Fatwa)

#1048: Did The Rasul See The Face Of His Lord? And Will The Believers See Allah In Paradise?

Assalam alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh admin

May Allah continue to protect you for us all.
My question is: I just wanted to know if Prophet Muhammad saw the face of Allah when he visited the seven heavens sir and how true is the saying that the prophet said; there is something more beautiful than paradise, which is seeing the face of Allah. Does that mean, if Allah grant us the mercy to reach Jannah, by His mercy we will get to see Allah’s face?

Thank you sir!

ANSWER:

Wa’alaikumus Salāmu Warahmatullāhi Wabarakātuh.

Praise be to Allah.

The Salaf (righteous predecessors) have differed on whether the prophet (may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) saw the face of Allah during the night of ascension or not. Allah knows best, but the most sound opinion is that the prophet did not see the face of Allah. And this is the view of most of the companions. The prophet only saw Jibrīl (peace be upon him).

Allah says:
{وَلَقَدْ رَآهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ}

And certainly he saw him in another descent,

Ibn Nasirus-Sa’dī among other Muffassirūn stated that it is Jibrīl, the prophet saw for the second time and not Allah as claimed by others .

{عِندَ سِدْرَةِ الْمُنتَهَىٰ}

At the farthest lote-tree;
[Surah An-Najm, Verses 13 – 14]

Imām Muslim reported on the authority of Abū Zarr (may Allah be pleased with him): I asked the messenger of Allah: Did you see your Lord? He replied: “He (is veiled by) light, How could I see Him?”

This hadīth proves that the Prophet did not see Allah as he only saw light which shielded him from seeing Allah.

But in the hereafter, the messenger of Allah, as well as other believers would see their Lord. And this is the consensus of Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamā’ah. There are numerous evidences affirming this from the Qur’an as well as the Sunnah. From which are:

The saying of Allah :

{وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَاضِرَةٌ ، إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ}

“Some faces that Day shall be نَاضِرَةٌ (shining and radiant), looking at their Lord.”
[Surah Al-Qiyāmah, Verses 22- 23]

And His saying:

{لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا الْحُسْنَىٰ وَزِيَادَةٌ…..}

“For those who have done good is the best reward and even more.”
[Surah Al-Yunus, Verse 26]

‘Al-Husnā’ has been interpreted to mean: paradise, while ‘Ziyaadah’ has been explained to mean: looking at Allah.

These are some of the evidences from the Qur’an proving that the believers will see their Lord in the Hereafter.

And from the Ahadīth:

The hadīth of Imām Muslim on the authority of Suhayb Ibn Sinān – May Allah be pleased with him – that the Prophet said:
“When those deserving of Paradise entered the Paradise, the Blessed and the Exalted (Allah) would ask: Do you wish Me to give you anything more? They would say: Have you not brightened our faces? Have you not made us enter Paradise and saved us from Fire? He (the narrator) said: He (Allah) would then lift the veil, and of things given to them nothing would be dearer to them than the sight of their Lord, the Mighty and the Glorious. Then the Messenger of Allah recited this Verse: ‘For those who have done good is the best reward and even more’.”

Shaykhul Islām ibn Taymiyyah says in his poem entitled Al-Lāmiyyah:

والمؤمنون يرون حقا ربهم

“And the Believers will surely see their Lord (in the Hereafter)”

May Allah, the Exalted bless us with ‘ Al-Husnā’ and ‘Ziyādah’.

And Allah knows best.

Barakallahu Fikum
Jazakumullahu Khayran.
