#305: What is Knowledge
*QUESTION*
“As-Salaamu Alaykum. Admin, Please what is knowledge in Islam?”_
*ANSWER*
Alhamdulillāh Wa As-Salātu Wa As-Salāmu ‘Alā Rasūlillah.
As for Knowledge then the Ulamā of Usūl have defined it as _”Having a precise and exact perception of what a thing is”_
While they define Ignorance as _”Either not having an idea about a thing or having a wrong perception of what it is”_
What this means is that whenever you betake a thing to be what it is not, you are ignorant of it. And this kind of ignorance is referred to as _Murakkab_ (Complex) because you are ignorant of its reality, and then ignorant of your ignorance. That is more than one ignorance in one place.
And then, whenever you have no perception of a thing in its entirety and is aware that you have no idea, this is referred to as _Basīt_ (Simple) Ignorance because it only takes a right teaching to take that ignorance out.
You can see that Knowledge in Islam is not about having information. Its about knowing the right thing about the right thing and in the right manner.
For further read, you may refer to the book _”Qurratu Al-‘Ain”_ by the Mālikī and Usūlī Imām Abū ‘Abdillah Muhammad Ar-Ru’aynī Al-Hattāb, rahimahullāh.
