#914: On Gathering To Recite The Qur’ān And Using That To Make Du’ā
“As salamu alaykum.Pls I want to ask a very confusing question here and it should be answer by anyone who Allah has bless with knowledge. My question is thia, Is it allowed or permitted for Muslim brothers to gather to recite Qur’an for the purpose of seeking something from Allah or giving thanks to Almighty Allah for what he has done for you.”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh
As for gathering to recite the Qur’ān, it is recommended and good if it is done for the purpose of memorising or studying it’s meanings. In the Hadith recorded by Imām Muslim bn Al-Hajjāj from Abū Hurayrah radiyallāhu’anhu the Rasūl -salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam – said:
ما اجتمع قوم في بيت من بيوت الله يتلون كتاب الله، ويتدارسونه بينهم، إلا نزلت عليهم السكينة، وغشيتهم الرحمة، وحفتهم الملائكة، وذكرهم الله فيمن عنده
“Any group of people that assemble in one of the Houses of Allah to recite the Book of Allah, learning and teaching it, tranquility will descend upon them, mercy will engulf them, angels will surround them and Allah will make mention of them to those (the angels) in His proximity.”
Likewise, there is nothing wrong in gathering people together to make Du’ā after you have finished the recitation of the Qur’ān (Khatmah) as this has been recorded from some of the Salaf that they would gather their families on the day they have finished the recitation of the Qur’ān to use it as Tawassul in the making of Du’ā.
Imām An-Nawawī rahimahumullāh mentioned in his book Al-Adhkār:
“And it is recommended to make Du’ā after completing the recitation of the Qur’ān. This recommendation is very emphatic due to what we have preceded in mention”
Imām Ad-Dārimī recorded in his Sunan that Anas bn Mālik radiyallāhu’anhu would gather his children and his wives whenever he finished the Recitation of the Qur’ān for the purpose of making Du’ā.
As for gathering for the purpose of splitting the Qur’ān into Parts and each person reciting a part and then making Du’ā at the end, there is no evidence for this act and it is feared to be a Bid’a that is reprehensible.
And there are many wrongs in this.
The First, reducing the Qur’ān to a recitation for the purpose of making Du’ā (Tawassul) only. Whereas the Qur’ān is to be recited, understood and pondered upon.
The Second, different people reciting different parts is not a Khatmah (Completion of the entire Qur’ān). A Khatmah is one person reciting the entirety of the Qur’ān.
The Third, it has not been recorded from any of the Predecessors that they did this.
And Allāh knows best
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazakumullāhu Khayran.
