#921: On The Ruling Of Wearing A Black Cloth
Assalam alaikum ya admin My question is it allowed or dislike for a Muslim(male) to pray with a black cloth?
ANSWER:
Alhamdulillahi!
Know verily, may the blessings of Allah Ta’āla be upon you that, it is permissible to wear black cloth as long as it’s not meant for pride nor aim to emulate the practice of the era of jahiliyyah who are known to be wearing black cloth during calamities or misfortune.
In this regard, It is reported in Sahīh Muslim#1359 from ‘Amru bn Hurīth who reported his father as saying:
ﻛَﺄَﻧِّﻲ ﺃَﻧْﻈُﺮُ ﺇِﻟَﻰ ﺭَﺳُﻮﻝِ ﺍﻟﻠَّﻪِ ﺻﻠﻰ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻭﺳﻠﻢ ﻋَﻠَﻰ ﺍﻟْﻤِﻨْﺒَﺮِ ﻭَﻋَﻠَﻴْﻪِ ﻋِﻤَﺎﻣَﺔٌ ﺳَﻮْﺩَﺍﺀُ ﻗَﺪْ ﺃَﺭْﺧَﻰ ﻃَﺮَﻓَﻴْﻬَﺎ ﺑَﻴْﻦَ ﻛَﺘِﻔَﻴْﻪِ . ﻭَﻟَﻢْ ﻳَﻘُﻞْ ﺃَﺑُﻮ ﺑَﻜْﺮٍ ﻋَﻠَﻰ ﺍﻟْﻤِﻨْﺒَﺮِ.
As if I am seeing the Rasūl Salallāhu alayhi wasallam on the pulpit with a black turban on his head, and its two ends hanging between his shoulders. Abu Bakr (another narrator) did not make mention of:”Upon the Pulpit
Imām An-nawawī said:
This shows the permissibility of wearing black cloth
