#441: Ruling on the One who ejaculates in His sleep without a Wet Dream

QUESTION

” Salamun aleikum waramatulah wabarakahtu, if a guy wakes and found himself wet without actually having any dream whatsoever, should he just clean up or compulsory he should have a spiritual bath… Thanks in anticipation.”

Alhamdulillāh, may Allāh reward you for your Inquisition, āmīn.

As for your question, know that the reason for the obligation of observing the ghusl after a wet dream is not the dream in itself but the ejaculation that comes with it.

That said, if you were to have a dream that involves intercourse and you wake up without some ejaculation, you are not to observe the ghusl. And if you were to wake up without a dream but with traces of ejaculation, you must observe the ghusl.

Evidence for this is the Hadīth collected from our mother A’isha – radiyallaahu anha – that she said:

سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ الرَّجُلِ يَجِدُ الْبَلَلَ وَلَا يَذْكُرُ احْتِلَامًا قَالَ يَغْتَسِلُ. رواه أحمد وأبو داوود والترمذي.

“The Messenger of Allāh – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – was asked concerning a man who finds the stains of semen and did not remember having a dream? He answered that he should make the ghusl.”

For this reason, Imām Al-Mardaawi – rahimahillaah – said in ‘Al-Insaaf’:

“As for the one who is asleep, if he were to see something on his clothes and did not remember having a dream, or any pleasures, it remains obligatory upon him to observe the ghusl. I do not know of any difference of verdict in this regard.”
