#569: Ruling on eating Locust
QUESTION
” Asalamualaikum wa ramatullah wa barakatuhu sir can I also consider d locust( fara) haram too for consumption or do they defer from grass cutter?”
ANSWER
Wa alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh.
Know, may Allāh guide us and you toward that which is right, that Locusts are Halāl for consumption by consensus.
This is due to the Hadīth recorded by Imām Muslim and Imām Al-Bukhārī in the Sahihayn from Abdullah bn Abī Awfā – radiyallahu ‘anhu – that he said:
غزونا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم سبع غزوات نأكل الجراد
“We waged Seven Campaigns alongside the Messenger of Allāh – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – during which we ate Locusts.”
That its permissibility is a consensus is mentioned by the Hāfidh Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalānī – rahimahullāh – in Fat’hu Al-Bārī
