QUESTION
“Salam alykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu. Am a member of Islam node. I have a question. A woman had complications after given birth, she passes flatus somtyms thru her vagina unknowingly and she experiences dis during prayers cos she has no control over it. Is d prayer valid?”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh
Alhamdulillāh!
Flatulence after child birth may either be natural and normal, or a symptom to an illness or a complication.
Our first advice is that the sister sees a Medical Doctor that her illness is treated
Secondly, are these symptoms associated with the Post Natal bleeding ( Nifās )? If they are then the Salāt was not required of her in the first place.
If however, this is a persistent passing of wind that cannot be controlled even after the period of the Nifās is passed, then it must be looked at: is she able to withhold the passing of the wind for the period it takes for her to observe the Salāt? If not, then the Ulamā are at a consensus that her Wudhū is not affected by the air that comes out of her in the course of the Salāt, and her condition is the same as that of a woman suffering from excessive bleeding ( Istihādah ) or Flowing Bladder.
Shaykh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah – rahimahullāh – said in Al-Fatāwah:
“Whomsoever is not able to preserve his Tahārah for just the period it takes to observe a Salāt (due to an Ilness) should just observe the Wudhū and observe the Salāt and will not be harmed by whatever comes out of him/her during the Salāt. His/her Wudhū is not terminated by that by the consensus of the Imāms. The most that is binding upon him/her is to make Wudhū before every Salāt.”
And because her condition is similar to the one who suffers from Istihādah, and Uncontrollable Urination, you may refer to the following Answers in our Fatāwah Channel: Nos: 66, 310, 313 and 314
Lastly we ask Allāh to grant sound health and rest of mind to the sister, and to bless the new born and make him/her one of the revivers of the Dīn in this era, Amin
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
