Q&A (Fatwa)

#641: Ruling on the Name “Ajmal”

QUESTION:

“Please what is the meaning of Ajmal. Is it a good name”

ANSWER:

Alhamdulillāh.

The Name Ajmal would translate as “The Most Beautiful” or “The Best”.

While we do not have a textual proof to consider this name to be Harām or impermissible, it is generally permissible.

But there are two reasons for which we discourage taking such a name:

1. There are better names for naming children which have been used by the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam- and the Muslims throughout our history such as Maryam, Khadījah, ‘Ā’ishah, ‘Ātikah, Maymūnah, and many others

2. The Ulamā generally discouraged names that could bring about Arrogance and Pride in it’s bearer. There is a fear that this name could make it’s bearer lose her shyness and feel she is better than others.

And Allāh knows best.
