#650: Ruling on praying behind One whose recitation is not Sound
QUESTION:
” Salamualaikum Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuhu
I have a Question sir which goes thus….There is a mosque around the area I stay which I have always been praying from my primary school days…This mosque is actually a mosque led and dominated by aged men(who have little knowledge)…when the imam is not around,,the solat is always been led by a man who has very little or even no qir’ah(قراء)in the recitation of the Quran….The question is can I walk up to this man during prayer to lead the Solat…Another thing is solatul-asri is always been prayed by 4 o’clock even when weather changes….These are the major challenges in the mosjid”

Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh
Alhamdulillāh!
What is first required from you, is to attempt correcting these elderly men with decorum, manners and good will if you can, thought they are elders to you and probably at the age of your parents. Of course this requires patience and humility. Recall that the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – said:
الدال على الخير كفاعله
“The one who shows good to others (gets equivalent reward) like the one who does (what he directs to of good)”
This Hadīth is recorded by Imām At-Tirmidhī from Anas bn Mālik – radiyallāhu ‘anhu.
If correction is not possible and you are able to install yourself as the Imām with the sincere intent of correcting this trend, and without causing any frictions, you may do so by the will of Allāh.
Then, if you are incapable of doing that, then what is required of you is to seek other Masājid in your neighborhood where you can observe your Salāt and the Imām knows the Qirā’ah with it’s Rules and the Sunnah is observed well. This is better for you and better for your rewards.
