#669: Ruling on attending Traditional Marriages
QUESTION:
“Assalam alaikum. May Allah preserve you upon khayr. What is the ruling on attending traditional marriage ceremonies?”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh.
May Allāh do same for you, amīn.
As for traditional marriages it is permissible to attend it provided that there is nothing done in it that contradicts the Sharī’ah of Allāh which a Muslim has been commanded by the Shāri’ (Law Giver) to avoid.
This is because of the Generality of the Obligation and Recommendation of responding to the Call of invitation to a Walimah as we have referred in our Commentary of the Last Chapter of Bulūghu Al-Marām in Kitābu Al-‘Ādāb while talking of the rights of the Muslims one on the other.
We established that the attendance of the Invitation which is a Walimah is obligatory in accordance to some of the Ulamā while others take it as an Emphatic recommendation.
The condition placed here is that there is nothing done in such a gathering that is Munkar (Abhorrent) in the Sharī’ah.
And Allāh knows best.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum.
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
